Taking Magnesium for a Month Has Changed My Sleep for the BEST!
Ever since having my son in 2020, My sleep has been a complete hot ass mess. From night sweats to having a hard time falling asleep, to waking up multiple times in the middle of the night, I am amazed my body has been able to function on such poor sleep. I had a great run for a few months when we got the black out curtains, sound machine, melatonin and cooling sheets for our sleep haven but shortly after I was right back to waking up multiple times a night and being exhausted in the mornings.
After being frustrated and fed up, I started looking for alternative sleep remedies that could help me fall asleep, rest my mind, and wake up feeling recharged. One day scrolling the gram, I saw a Holistic Doctor that I follow talking about the amazing benefits of Magnesium.
Lets talk about it!
What are the benefits of Magnesium?
Magnesium is a nutrient that the body needs to stay healthy. Magnesium is important for many processes in the body, including regulating muscle and nerve function, blood sugar levels, and blood pressure and making protein, bone, and DNA. It plays a crucial role in maintaining the regular function of your immune system and heart.
Some studies even show that Magnesium can act as a natural sleep aid for adults and also help regulate neurotransmitters that are related to sleep, calm the nervous system, and tell our brains it’s time for rest!
As soon as I saw this, it was like the universe was telling me something because moments later another fitness influencer that I follow shared her favorite magnesium supplement to take. I ordered it with the quickness and waited anxiously for it to be deliver.
What Happened when I tried it…
We are all family here right? Cuz I am about to get personal! Okay…so the magnesium arrived a few days later. As soon as we got our son to bed, I told my husband I am taking this new magnesium supplement and going to bed! See you in the morning! (Or so I thought) I poured the powder into my glass of water, mixed it all until it dissolved and drank it down. I have the watermelon flavor and I really like the taste. They say it takes about 30-40 minutes for your body to begin feeling at ease and more relaxed. I did my skin care routine and jumped into bed excited to fall asleep. Moments later my stomach said “bish if you don't go to the bathroom right now you are about to mess up these sheets” I jumped out of bed and ran to the bathroom and I swear I released everything as far back as 2021.
I immediately googled if magnesium was a natural laxative and it turns out it indeed it LOL! My husband was on the floor laughing at me BUT that night I got the best sleep I have had in years!
Okay so this is where you are going to think I am crazy because the next night I was ready to risk it all so that I could get a restful night of sleep again. To my surprise, I didn't have to go to the bathroom and haven’t had to since that first night. So of course I hit up google again and found that it is common to use the bathroom the first night of taking magnesium for some but after that you are all good!
Will I keep using it?
The answer is YES! Taking magnesium has not been the only thing that has been helping me sleep. I avoid screen time and keep my computer out of my bed. If I wake up in the middle of the night, I do not look at my phone to check the time because the light from your phone actually tells your brain it is time to wake up. I still have the sound machine, black out curtains and an air purifier in our room to make the conditions perfect for sleep. I do think magnesium is helping me in so many other ways. For the first time, I am able to go to sleep and stay asleep through the night without waking up. If I do wake up to use the bathroom, I fall right back asleep. I wake up actually rested and not groggy as if I have taken Tylenol PM. I also have no brain fog!
If you are having bouts of insomnia or can not stay asleep, I encourage you to check out magnesium! I have also heard that Tart Cherry Juice is also a natural sleep aid but I have not tried it yet! As always, Be sure to consult with a doctor and, if taking magnesium, follow dosage recommendations.
